Flystrike

Well, for my birthday today I have been checking poo samples under the microscope and cleaning fly strike from wounds on some very poorly hedgehogs.

Below are some pictures of puncture wounds from canine teeth on one of the hedgehogs that came in earlier, with fly strike (fly eggs/maggots) around them.

This is after I cleared cart loads of them off with a special spray, a pair of tweezers and some mascara brushes. There are literally thousands of eggs all over the poor creatures.

I also got a ton of puss from some of the wounds.

Tracy has now taken them to EVC for a vet to have a look at them – it’s possible one of the hogs has injuries to both its back legs, on top of all the other problems.

We are not too hopeful that either of them will be coming back.
