Work Experience Placements
We are able to offer a limited number of opportunities for work experience placements to anyone studying or already involved in wildlife rehabilitation who have an interest in hedgehog rehabilitation.
Unfortunately, we are not able to offer work experience placements to people under the age of 18.
General Tasks Include
- Feeding, weighing and checking the hedgehogs
- Cleaning the hedgehog cages and/or hutches – indoors and outdoors
- Completing hedgehog care records and daily observations
- Cleaning and organising food storage/prep area
- Sweeping/mopping floors
- Washing up, laundry etc
Some hedgehogs need cleaning out several times a day.
In the spring and summer months many hoglets require hand feeding from early in the morning until last thing at night.
Outside enclosures need cleaning daily and all outside hedgehogs need fresh food and water every day.
Costs:
We do not charge for work placements.
Travel Costs:
All placements are on the strict understanding that persons on the placement are responsible for making their own travel arrangements, and at their own cost. Dorset Hedgehog Rescue are unable to provide transport or pay travel expenses.
PLEASE NOTE – the minimum age for placement applicants is 18 years.
Placements can be for a minimum of 1 week (maximum of 4 weeks unless by special arrangement), between 1st February and 30th November each year. As the winter months are usually very quiet at the rescue centre, the benefits to students at this time of year are limited.
