April

This is April, an adult female hog, 525g, found wobbling and unable to stand, covered in flystrike. She is very thin and dehydrated, and fairly unresponsive.

We gave her warm subcutaneous fluids and kept her on a heat pad while we treated and cleaned off the flystrike/maggots.

She has no major wounds or injuries, but is very emaciated, with lots of lose skin. She has probably not long woken up from hibernation and has been unable to find food & water.

She is recovering in one of our ICU’s now, but remains fairly unresponsive. Hopefully warmth and continued fluid therapy, along with some food and water, she will improve.

She will be checked for internal parasites, and treated as required.

This is a good time to remind people that it is important for wildlife, not just hedgehogs, that at least a shallow bowl of water is left out, especially when it is hot and dry.
