Over the weekend we have had a number of tiny hoglets arriving with us from various places. Many of them arrived on Saturday, so it is possible the storm on Fri night spooked a few mums and they abandoned their babies.
This little one – named Henny – was found a couple of hours ago crawling around on the lawn in a garden in Charlton Marshall. She is around 10 – 12 days old, with her eyes and ears not yet open and weighs 75g.
She has joined another hoglet of a similar size in one of our home based incubators, and will be fed every 4 hours around the clock until she can begin the process of weaning. Once weaned they will go on to the main rescue at the barn until they are big enough for release.
Thank you to Donna Merchant for arranging this little girl coming to rescue. The speed it was done meant she did not have time to get cold while laying out in the open.
If you seen any hoglets, or indeed any hedgehogs laying out in the open, please act fast. Pop them in a box with a towel and call your nearest rescue as a matter of urgency. Hedgehog do not sunbathe unless they are sick, injured or like this one – not old enough to walk yet.
