Bilbo Baggins had to pay a visit to the Vets today. She had one of her rear legs amputated by the emergency vets recently, due to having had it trapped somehow and in getting herself free had ripped part of the leg off.
The resulting wound was infected, despite a course of antibiotics, which has caused problems with the healing of the amputation wound.
Upton vets took her in today to clean up the wound and re-stitch it for us. The wound was flushed, debrided and lasered, then stitched up. Hopefully it will heal properly now, and Bilbo can get on with rehabilitation.
Thank you to Upton & Wareham Vets for taking care of Bilbo for us
This poor old fella came to us Friday afternoon, he was found wandering around in circles.
Upon examination, we found that both his eyes are missing, with small wounds around the area, which suggests that birds have pecked his eyes out .
He does have a respiratory infection, which could explain why he would have been out in daytime and was able to be attacked.
Hogs like this cause us ethical and moral issues – do we keep him alive to live in permanent captivity, all be it in an enclosed garden, or do we have him put to sleep.
We’ll have to sleep on this one, poor bugger.
We were called out to a hog in need of help by a dog walker on Wednesday, but despite a thorough search, were unable to find him.
The next lunchtime, some good news – the hog that we were looking for had been found and brought in to us.
He was wandering around erratically and going in circles. He didn’t seem to see Dawn, the finder, or even roll up when she him picked up.
He was dehydrated, and had what look like bite marks on the left side of his face and nose, and a bald patch with 2 puncture wounds under his neck.
He had had subcut fluids, and was placed into a quiet box with food.
We had this adult male hog dropped off to us on Tuesday morning from Blandford, it had been found laying out on the drive, not moving and did not roll up when poked.
It was dehydrated and had some bite wounds on it’s right side, just above the skirt.
We gave it subcut fluids for the dehydration and shock, cleaned and treated his wounds and placed him in one of the ICU’s , but he sadly passed away an hour later.

I used our new suction machine to clean out a massively infected wound on a hog, it cleaned all the pus and blood out really well – I’m very impressed, and I’m sure the poor hog appreciates all that gunk being removed from it’s body too.
Duncan is back from the vets now, having had his left hind leg amputated.
He will have a course of antibiotics to fight off any infection, and pain relief.
The notes from the vet state that he has been eating well, and has been to loo, which is important after an operation.
We have another victim of entrapment/constriction injury.
This hog was seen on cctv playback, and noticed there was something wrong with its back left leg.
We were sent the video by Neil, who told us that he would try and catch the hog that night, which luckily he was able to do, and we collected it straight away.
Update on Mabel the hog with constriction injuries ….
On Friday she came back to us after spending 24 hours with our vet. During that time she was anesthetised to enable her gaping throat wound to be cleaned and debrided. She also has laser treatment to speed up the healing process.
No sooner finished one hog with fly strike, and another comes in.
This one was brought to us from Blandford, having been found trapped in plastic. The finder cut the hog free and brought it straight to us.
This poor hogs ears were packed solid with flies eggs, and it has a garrote type wound about its neck that was also covered in eggs.
