Looking for food

With the arrival of spring, we are getting lots of sightings of hedgehogs emerging from hibernation, and looking for food. They will be hungry and very thirsty.

Below is a simple idea for a feeding station. This will not only stop cats/foxes eating the food, but will also allow you to watch your garden hedgehogs eating, which is always a pleasure to see. Pop a couple of small solar lights outside the box if your garden is very dark, which will help you see them inside.

Poultry flavoured cat biscuits, or meaty cat/dog food is ideal, plus there are many hedgehog specific brands of food available in pet shops and online. Please avoid any foods that contain sunflower hearts, peanuts and mealworms – all of which are extremely harmful to hedgehogs health.

Don’t forget a shallow dish of water!
